Posted on Ocak 25, 2024

Artvin Castle is located in Artvin Çayağzı District. It is connected to the bedrock at an altitude of 70 meters from the river bottom, on the opposite side of the Artvin Bridge on the Çoruh River, at the exit point of the Erzurum-Samsun highway to Artvin city center. There are cistern and chapel ruins inside the castle. This castle, at the entrance of the city of Artvin on the banks of the Çoruh River, was built by Bagrat (Georgian) King Oshet the Great in 937. The old name of the castle is Livana.
In the sixth century, the Ottomans built a new castle on the ruins of this castle and it was repaired in various periods. It is a small castle and controls the entrance to the city. Its restoration was carried out in 2004 and the lighting project of the castle was completed in 2012. Since it is located within the Military Zone, it can be visited by informing the security forces and accompanied by a soldier.
